Indian benchmark indices are likely to open higher on Tuesday ahead of the 34th GST Council meeting, due later in the day. According to news reports, the council will discuss and finalise the rules under which the new rate structure on under-construction houses will be implemented. Asian shares treaded water on Tuesday ahead of a US Federal Reserve policy meeting, hovering near six-month highs, while sterling was choppy as the speaker of Britain's parliament banned another vote on same Brexit deal. On the global front, the US Fed will begin its meeting on interest rates today, which ends with a news conference on Wednesday. Moreover, Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit deal suffered new blow after Britain’s parliament banned another vote on same Brexit deal. The Indian rupee yesterday hit an eight-and-a-half month high of 68.53 a dollar on increased portfolio flow. Overseas investors have already poured Rs 22,340 crore into domestic equities this month. In the commodity market, oil prices hovered just below 2019 highs early on Tuesday, supported by ongoing supply cuts led by producer club OPEC. Back home, bullish trends in the SGX Nifty Index Futures for March delivery, which were trading at 11,522.50, up by 11.50 points or 0.10 per cent, at 11:06 AM, Singapore Time, also indicated a positive start for local bourses. On the corporate front, Larsen & Toubro has made an offer to buy up to 66 per cent stake in the Mindtree for around Rs 10,800 crore. The Anil Ambani-led Reliance Communications has made the payment of Rs 458 crore to Ericsson as per court orders. Also, the company and Reliance Jio have terminated their agreement for sale of specified assets by mutual consent. Etihad has refused to agree on the contours of the rescue plan for Jet Airways, according to a report. The 30-share index settled at 38095.07 up by 70.75 points or by 0.19 per cent and then NSE Nifty was at 11462.2 up by 35.35 points or by 0.31 per cent. The BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 38369.59 and intraday low of 37952.1 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 11530.15 and intraday low of 11412.5.

On NSE, total number of shares traded was 158.51 Crore and total turnover stood at Rs. 32733.87 Crore. On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 333730 with a total turnover of Rs. 23816.72 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 792879 with a total turnover of Rs. 50366.02 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 13600369 with a total turnover of Rs. 915434.44 Crore. and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 866748 with a total turnover of Rs. 57281.49 Crore.

As on March 18, 2019, the FIIs stood as net buyer in equity and debt market. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 15322.65 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 3345.49 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 11860.26 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 421.07 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. 3462.39 Crore and Rs. 2924.42.
